Critique1:
-The purpose of this chapter is to inform the reader that the political and religious views coincide with eachother.
-Many industrialized countries have weakened the bond between church goers and political parties; however the US still has a strong connection between the two. "The geographic division of people by biblical belief and political learning is further evidence of the big sort (Bishop 125)."
Critique 2:
-To persuade
-"The various threads of conservative thought and faith began to intertwine and social, religious and ideological movements slowly braided together (bishop 113)."
-To support the thesis bishop states that all these groups have many things in common the country lack of discipline and distrusted the government. He gives examples from Orange County Cali, which the movement then steered towards public schools and fought over sexual education.Bishop uses emotionally loaded terms to persuade the audience.
Critique 3:
-To persuade
-Social scientists believed religion would fall victim to modernization, people felt it would be practiced and then fade away.
-To support this thesis Bishop states," Society would simply outgrow the need for organized faith (Bishop 109)." Bishop uses cause and effect by saying believers are found only in small sections in our own secular culture. It has been predicted that religion would soon run its course and disappear.
